Trimester) kommt es zu einer raschen Gehirnentwicklung und zu neuroplastischen Ver\u00e4nderungen. Da die meisten S\u00e4uglinge auf der Neugeborenen-Intensivstation zwischen der 22. und der 40. Schwangerschaftswoche (SSW) geboren wurden,<sup id=\"cite_ref-:4_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-:4-3\">(3)<\/a><\/sup> findet diese Entwicklung bei ihnen also au\u00dferhalb des Mutterleibs statt. Der direkte Kontakt wird hergestellt, indem das Baby bis auf die Windel entkleidet und in Bauchlage auf die Brust der Mutter gelegt wird. Das nicht-nutritive Saugen bietet eine taktile Stimulation der intraoralen Strukturen und der Gesichtsmuskeln durch einen Schnuller oder einen Finger im Handschuh.
